From Timber to Tribute: The Billy Ray Casteel Story
How a College Graduate Built a Lumber Empire and a Hotel Honoring Alabama's Heritage
Good morning HAPPY Trailblazers,
How did this college grad turn his first job at a lumber company into a business empire? And then pay a unique tribute to the art and history of Alabama's Shoals area.
Billy Ray Casteel, a University of Alabama graduate, worked his way up from basic jobs in a lumber company to owning the business, Lumber One. He expanded the company and later opened the GunRunner Boutique Hotel in Florence, Alabama, to celebrate local culture. Today, he successfully manages both his lumber business and the hotel, showing his skill in growing diverse business ventures.
I’m not in the lumber business. I’m in the people business. I don’t believe in hiring someone to do my job. And I view my job as running the company.

Billy Ray Casteel was born in October 1969 in a small town in Alabama. Casteel's professional path began after he graduated from the University of Alabama. His education was a foundation of skills and knowledge that he later applied in his career.

Early Career
Post graduation from the University of Alabama, Casteel entered the lumber business with a foundational role in shipping and receiving. This experience would have deepened his industry knowledge and business acumen, especially in customer relations and market dynamics.
Taking Shape
In 2000, Casteel and a partner acquired Lumber One’s flagship location in Littleville, AL. Following the acquisition of the first location, Casteel expanded his business by adding more locations. In 2002, he added the Sheffield location, and in 2004, expanded to Senoia, Georgia. This expansion indicates strategic growth and success in the lumber business.
Ideas are cheap. Execution is everything.
As Lumber One continued to grow, Casteel shifted his focus toward business administration, personnel management, and production. This change signifies a move from direct sales to a broader strategic role, overseeing the company’s operations and growth.
